Will I Lose Weight If I Stop Eating? The Hard Truth

will-i-lose-weight-if-i-stop-eating

In this post, I will answer the question: “ Will I lose weight if I stop eating? ” This question can be difficult to answer with an outright “yes” or “no” because there are multifarious aspects that one has to consider.

First, you have to understand how the body works and what happens when you stop eating. You have to consider too, the unhealthy side effects of starving yourself.

Before I answer the major question, you have to know first the answers to these sub questions.

Why do You Eat?

You have to eat because your body needs energy to perform its physical and physiological functions. The food, specifically carbohydrates (rice, bread, pasta, starch), are the main source of energy for the body.

Carbohydrates are converted to glucose and together with ATP, energy is created. If glucose is not needed, it’s stored in the body as glycogen. A normal male requires around 1,750 calories per day. If he moves a lot, he will need even more than that.

The brain alone requires more than 100 calories to operate properly. So, you need food so that you can remain healthy and strong.

What are The Side Effects of Starvation?

When you stop eating, there are several detrimental effects on your body. Scientific studies conducted on selected subjects have proven the following:

1. Unhealthy Weight Loss

Because carbohydrate is no longer available to be used as energy, the brain has to trigger the use of fats in the body as an alternative source. Hence, the stored fats are used producing ketones to cope with your body’s energy requirements.

The body has to conserve energy by slowing metabolism. This is in response for the insufficiency of carbohydrates coming from food.

2. Reduced Muscle Mass

As soon as the fats are depleted in the body, the body will then utilize protein (amino acids) to let the body survive. Proteins are found in your muscles, so the muscles will decrease in size because the protein is used for energy.

This will continue until the body will be able to obtain energy from other sources.

The lack of protein will result to diseases caused by insufficient protein, such as Kwashiorkor, and other protein deficiency illnesses.

3. Reduced Mental Ability

The brain can operate even when you don’t eat for long days, but its ability to focus, think rationally and remember things will be reduced. Researches have proven that when people were starved, they were unable to focus clearly on what they were doing.

They had bouts of memory loss too, and were irritable, easily depressed and had mood swings.

There were a few reports of the subjects of the study acquiring mental problems and had to be treated by a psychiatrist for a long time.

4. Weakened Immune System

People who stopped eating had become easily susceptible to many diseases as well. Their immune system had weakened and their body could not perform its natural defense mechanism.

5. Malnutrition

When the body lacks essential nutrients and vitamins, malnutrition sets in. This can result to illnesses, such as mental, physical and psychological.

6. Death

When you stop eating, every process in your body slows down. It will keep slowing down until it completely stops. There will be cardiac failure or heart attack because of the lack of vital electrolytes; your muscles could stop moving because of lack of proteins; and similar occurrences.

Here’s an image to explain the process.

Will I Lose Weight if I Stop Eating?

Based on the facts previously presented, the answer to the question: is “Yes, you will lose weight, but it’s not recommended because of its detrimental effects on your health”.

If you survive, and decide to eat again, you could get sick, if you don’t know how to gradually feed yourself. The weight you have lost would also be regained, plus a lot more weight because your body’s metabolism had now slowed down.

Furthermore, your health will deteriorate and it will take days for you to recover. In the studies, some subjects had to be treated for their mental problem for a long time.

In the end, your weight loss would only be temporary – unless you want to starve yourself to death.

Conclusion

The question: “ Will I lose my weight if I stop eating? ” was answered in this post. The best method to lose weight is not to stop eating but to perform regular exercises, eat a proper diet and observe healthy living. These are still the best methods for weight loss.
